History of the American Flag

The American flag has been a symbol of freedom, unity, and national pride since the birth of the United States. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the first official flag, featuring 13 stripes representing the original colonies and 13 stars symbolizing a new nation.

As the United States grew, so did the flag. New stars were added to represent each state joining the Union, while the 13 stripes remained to honor the nation’s founding colonies. The current design, featuring 50 stars and 13 stripes, was adopted on July 4, 1960, following Hawaii’s admission as the 50th state.

Today, the Stars and Stripes stands as one of the most recognized symbols in the world. It represents the sacrifices of those who have served, the freedoms Americans cherish, and the enduring spirit of a nation built on liberty and opportunity.
